This Vegan Green Bean Casserole is as easy to make and has just as much flavor as the original green bean casserole.

There is no store bought soups in this recipe, it is all homemade.

Not only can you make this casserole vegan, but also gluten free!

Even though this dish is traditionally made during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, it can be a wonderful side dish any time of year!

It doesn’t have to be just a side dish, it also is tasty as a main meal on top of buttered toast!

Alternative toppings

There are so many ways you can top this casserole, onions, bread or not topping it with anything at all.

Or why not serve the toppings on the side as a garnish.

    Vegan Green Bean Casserole

    Ingredients needed for this casserole

    • Broth – In this recipe I used my favorite vegetable broth.
    • Plant Based Milk – Any plant based milk will work in this recipe, pick your favorite. I used a unsweetened plain almond milk.
    • Flour – A all purpose flour is used to make the roux. A gluten free flour can be used in the roux.
    • Onion – Any onion of choice will work in this recipe. If you do not have a fresh onion, a powdered or minced onion will work for this dish.
    • Garlic – Fresh or minced garlic will add flavor to this dish.
    • Soy Sauce – Soy sauce adds color and depth of flavor to this casserole.
    • Margarine – A vegan margarine is use to make the roux for this dish.
    • Mushrooms – Fresh mushrooms are the best for this dish, but can mushrooms will work in a pinch. I like to use a white button mushroom or portabello mushroom in this casserole.
    • Oil – Olive or avocado oil is what I use to saute my vegetables.
    • Celery – Celery adds a crispy, aromatic flavor to this dish.
    • Green Beans – Fresh, canned or frozen green beans will work for this dish.
    • Salt and Pepper – To taste.

    Topping Options

    • Fried Onions – Today there are so many fried onions available on the market. You are able to find regular crispy fried onions and gluten free fried onions. But you can also make your own fried onions to top this dish. Just chop up your favorite onion, fry until caramel color and add to the dish before serving.
    • Bread – This can be just stale bread crumbs, toasted bread or a panko bread crumbs.
    • Nothing – Yes, you can just eliminate a topping all together.
    • Banquet style – You can always serve fried onions and seasoned toasted bread crumb on the side for those who would like to add this to the top of the casserole when you serve.

    How to make this Vegan Green Bean Casserole

    Preheat the oven to 350°F.

    Grease a 2.5 Qt. baking dish with margarine and set aside.

    If using fresh green bean, clean and set aside, if using canned green beans, drain and set aside, but if using frozen, no prep is needed.

    In a medium sized sauce pan, on low heat, melt the margarine with salt and pepper.

    Sprinkle in flour while stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.

    In 3 to 5 minutes you will have a light roux.

    Next pour and blend the milk, soy sauce, and vegetable broth in the roux with a wire whisk.

    Turn up the heat to medium and stir constantly for up to 2 minutes or until the sauce thickens.

    Once the sauce is thick, set aside.

    Clean and cut up the mushrooms, celery, garlic, and onion.

    Add the vegetables and oil to a large skillet, saute for about 5 to 7 minutes.

    Pour the sauteed vegetables into the white sauce and stir to combine.

    Place the green beans into the baking dish, pour the white sauce over the beans and stir.

    Next if adding a topping, sprinkle over the top of the beans.

    Cover the dish and place into the oven for 1 1/2 hours.

    Once the casserole is done, remove from the oven and serve hot as a side dish to any meal.

    • 1 2.5 QT. Baking Dish

    • 1 Cup Vegetable Broth
    • 1 1/2 Cup Plant Based Milk I used unsweetened plain almond milk.
    • 3 Tbsp All Purpose Flour
    • 1 Medium Onion Or 1 Tbsp Onion Powder or Minced Onion.

    • 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
