Vegan Barbecue Tempeh Sandwich

This Vegan Barbecue Tempeh Sandwich is full of smokey flavor, packed full of protein, and best of all, easy!

So you may be asking yourself why I used tempeh and not tofu?

Both products are made out of soybeans, but there are some major differences between the two.

The taste and texture of both of these soy products are very different.

Tempeh is pieces of beans formed together, while tofu is ground up beans with no definition at all.

As for flavor, tempeh has a more nutty and earthy taste, and tofu takes on the flavor of what ever you add it too.

The best way to experiment with tempeh is to just try it in a simple dish, that is how I introduced it to myself and the family.

And what better way to try tempeh than to make this vegan barbecue sandwich, because after all who doesn’t like a good barbecue sandwich?

Vegan Barbecue Tempeh Sandwich

Ingredients needed for this sandwich

  • Tempeh – Tempeh has it’s own unique taste, a chewy and firm texture with a earthy and nutty flavor. This makes it perfect to add to stir fry’s and as a meat replacement for us vegans and vegetarians.
  • Oil – Any oil will work to saute the tempeh in, I used a avocado oil in this recipe.
  • Barbecue Sauce – store bought or a homemade sauce.
  • Bread – Use your favorite bread for this sandwich.
  • Plant Based Mayo – Homemade or store bought mayo of your choice.
  • Pickles – Optional. Regular or a bread and butter pickle can be served on the sandwich or served on the side of the sandwich.
  • Plant Based Cheese – Optional. Pick your favorite cheese of choice.

How to make a Vegan Barbecue Tempeh Sandwich

Remove the tempeh from the packaging and slice into thin slices.

In a large skillet add the thinly sliced tempeh to the oil and cook on a medium heat.

After a few minutes flip the slices, browning both sides of the tempeh.

Once the tempeh has browned on each side, add the barbecue sauce and water.

Vegan Barbecue Tempeh Sandwich

Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, while stirring just to prevent the tempeh from burning. (Do not over stir, the tempeh, it will fall apart easily.)

After 5 or 7 minutes, check if the tempeh is warm, once warm remove from heat and set aside.

Toast the bread of your choice.

Once the bread is toasted, spread the mayo onto each slice of toast.

Next spoon the barbecue tempeh onto the mayo.

Finish with topping the tempeh with cheese and sliced pickles (optional) and finish off with the other slice of toast.

Serve your barbecue sandwich with a side of your favorite chips and a pickle.

  • 1 8 oz Package Tempeh
  • 1/4 Cup Water
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp Oil Any oil will work, I used avocado oil for this recipe.
  • 1/2 Cup Barbecue Sauce Homemade or store bought.
  • Sliced Bread
  • Vegan Mayo
  • Sliced Pickles Optional
  • Sliced Cheese of your choice Optional
