Vegan Baked Apples are really so easy to make and they are a healthy alternative to a sugar loaded apple pie.
So forget about making a apple pie, individually customize each baked apple for everyone in the family.
Below are a few different ways to customize your baked apples for everyone, be creative and experiment.
Try different spices to compliment your apples.
Add cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or even basil.
Experiment with different varieties of apples. ( Here are just a few I have tried. )
Fuji apples – This apple is very sweet, crisp, and crunchy. It holds it shape very well when baked.
Pink Lady – This sweet, yet tart apple is a very firm apple, making it perfect for baking and of course snacking.
Honeycrisp – The honeycrisp is widely known for it’s sweet, crisp, and juicy flesh. This apple holds it shape well when used for baking.
Braeburn – This apple is a sweet and firm apple that holds up well when baked.
Ambrosia – Ambrosia apples are a sweet, crisp, and juicy apple. This apple holds it’s shape when baked.
Add more to these apples with different fruits or berries.
Try blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or even Blackberries.
Add sliced peaches, pears, or even try a little lemon, lime, or orange rind adding a light zesty flavor.
You can also add different types of nuts or dried fruit.
Add walnuts, raisins, currents, or pecans.
You can even sprinkle a little quick oats on the top of your apples before baking.
Ingredients for the baked apples
- Apples – Any variety of apple works well for baked apples. I like to experiment with different varieties. But be aware, some apples will become mushy when baked, this is why I like to use a crisp and crunchy apple for this recipe.
- Vegan Margarine – Any plant based margarine can be used in this recipe.
- Sugar – I have used brown sugar and real maple syrup on these baked apples. Brown sugar will give a caramel flavor, almost a toffee like taste. Real maple syrup will give you a slight smokey, vanilla, and caramel flavor.
- Seasonings – I added ground cinnamon to my apples. A few spices to try are ginger, nutmeg, or basil.
How to make Vegan Baked Apples
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Clean and cut the core out of the apples.
Place the apples into a glass baking dish. ( The size will vary depending on how many apples you are baking. )
Add the margarine into the core area of each apple half.
Sprinkle the brown sugar or pour the maple syrup evenly on top of each apple.
Lastly, sprinkle the spices of choice over each of the apples.
If adding extras, such as fruits, oats, or nuts, add to each apple.
Pour about 1/2 inch of water into the bottom of the dish before baking, this will help to keep the apples moist during baking.
Place the dish into the oven and bake for about 35 to 40 minutes.
NOTE: The time can vary depending on the type of apple you use and how tender you would like the apples.
Once the apples are done to your desired tenderness, remove from the oven.
Serve your baked apple just as they are or top them with your favorite ice cream or whipped topping.
Enjoy!
