With the fresh crisp apples and the warming spices of fall, make this a perfect treat!

Fresh and frozen apples can be used for this apple crisp, which means you can make this any time of year!

Not only is it vegan but it is easy to make Gluten Free!

In the recipe I give you both alternatives, so you can choose gluten free or not.

The best ways to serve your apple crisp is with a whipped topping or one of my families favorite is to top it with ice cream as soon as the crisp comes out of the oven.

So Let’s fire up that oven, enjoy the smells of Fall and learn how to make a Vegan Apple Crisp!

Ingredients needed for this crisp

  • Apples – A firm and crisp apple is best in a apple crisp. And with so many new varieties coming out every year, what a great time to experiment to find your favorite. I personally do not have a specific apple that I use. But I always use a firm, crisp, and sweet yet tart apple for this crisp. I also mix varieties of different apples as well as use some frozen and fresh.
  • Sugar – I have made this recipe with brown sugar and with maple syrup. My family enjoys the crisp both ways. The brown sugar gives the crisp a caramel or toffee taste. The maple syrup gives the crisp a caramel and vanilla flavor with a hint of maple.
  • Flours – If wanting to do a gluten free crisp, I used almond flour. If gluten is not a issue, all purpose flour can be used. When using different flours the taste of the apple crisp will change.
  • Oats – Either a rolled oat or a quick oat will work for this recipe, and will not change the baking time. Do not use a steel cut oat for this recipe, the results will be chewier and not a pleasant texture.
  • Margarine – A vegan margarine will help to hold the crisp together, caramelize and brown the oat topping. A real butter can be used in this recipe as well.
  • Ground Cinnamon – The warm cinnamon spice for this apple crisp gives a sweet and woodsy flavor that compliment the apple perfectly.
  • Flour – A all purpose flour or a gluten free flour can be used in this recipe.

Preheat oven to 375° F.

Grease a 9×13 glass baking dish with margarine or coconut oil.

Add the diced apples to the greased baking dish, making sure to spread them out evenly.

In a Medium bowl, mix the remaining ingredients for the crisp, this should be a crumble texture, easy to sprinkle on top of the apples.

Sprinkle this mixture over your apples, drizzle a bit of maple syrup over the top to prevent the apples from drying out while baking.

Tips for this recipe

Fresh cut apples work well in this recipe, but they tend to make the crisp drier, this is why adding a little maple syrup over before baking is important.

Frozen apples will have to thaw before making this crisp. Let the frozen apples thaw in the refrigerator 1 or 2 days before making this recipe. Drain any excess water from the apples before adding to the crisp.

While baking this apple crisp, if you notice that it looks a little dry, you can add maple syrup. I have this while baking and even after I have finished baking.

If you are baking this apple crisp with gluten free flours or a vegan margarine, I have noticed that the top does not seem to get a golden brown like it would with regular flour or real butter. So I go by the tenderness of the apples. I have made this apple crisp for years and have tried it as a vegan and non-vegan recipe, this is what I have found in my experience.

Also the bake times can vary, so keep a close eye on this. After 35 minutes, check the tenderness of the apples, if they are to your liking, it is done. If not continue in 5 minute increments deciding if it needs to bake a little longer.
