This Homemade Vegan Chai is full of aromatic herbs associated with the chai that you can find, well, pretty much everywhere.

If you haven’t tried chai, well you really are missing out!

The perfect combination of black tea, milk, and spices make this drink a perfect treat!

You can serve it hot or chilled, top it with whipped cream, or substitute the black tea for a different tea.

In this recipe I used anise star and fennel because I love the different licorice flavor both those spices bring.

It’s so easy to customize this tea to your own taste, so why not make your own chai!

This wonderful spiced tea is just full of flavor!

Where did Chai come from?

Chai is very popular and easy to find these days

But do you know where chai originated?

Chai originated in India sometime between 5000 to 9000 years ago.

It was originally used more in traditional medical practices as it is believed the spices and herbs have healing properties.

Today, people enjoy it because of it’s wonderful aromatic taste.

I didn’t know much about chai until I managed and owned my own coffee shops.

That is where I was introduced to the flavorful spiced tea.

I also learned how easy it is to make at home, and with this recipe, you can enjoy your very own Homemade Vegan Chai!

What Ingredients are needed for Chai?

  • Tea – Black tea is the common tea used and it is what was used in this recipe. But try different types of teas, such as green tea, yerba mate, or a rooibos tea for a caffeine free chai.
  • Milk – In this recipe I used almond milk, but any of the plant based milks will work just as well.
  • Sweetener – Maple syrup was my choice because of it’s hints of vanilla and caramel. Try any sweetener of your choice or even no sweetener.
  • Spices – Any warming spices will work in this tea. I used cinnamon, fennel, ginger, cloves, black peppercorn, star anise, and cardamon. Remove or add your favorites, experiment!
  • Vanilla – I used vanilla extract in this tea recipe, but real vanilla bean would be even better!
