And because we are in the full swing of the holidays, add in that crisp cold weather of winter, it’s a perfect time to share with you my hot chocolate recipe.

That cozy comforting hot steaming rich chocolate drink that is so welcoming, it makes you just want to relax in a warm blanket with a hot cup and a good movie.

So why would you waste the time and money on those premixed powder, when you can make your own?

Hot chocolate really is easy to whip together in just a few minutes and you only need just 6 ingredients!

And because you are making your own hot chocolate from scratch you control the sweetness and chocolate.

So what is so special about this hot chocolate?

In this recipe I add both the cocoa powder and chocolate chips to give the hot chocolate a creamier richer chocolate flavor.

So if you love chocolate you are going to fall in love with this drink, it is so full of that rich sweet smooth chocolate flavor!

But the best part is that you can customize the flavor to everyone’s own taste.

Ingredients needed for Hot Chocolate

  • Milk – I used an unsweetened plain almond milk. Try different unsweetened non dairy milks for your hot chocolate, such as oat, hemp, coconut, soy, or cashew. Try to use the unsweetened milks for this recipe, this will help to control the sweetness of the hot chocolate.
  • Chocolate – This can be your favorite chocolate chips or a chopped chocolate bar. The chocolate will give the hot chocolate a smooth texture and a sweet rich flavor.
  • Cocoa Powder – Use an unsweetened cocoa powder for the hot chocolate. This adds a richer and more intense chocolate flavor to the hot drink.
  • Real Maple Syrup – Maple syrup is my sweetener of choice. It adds a hint of a caramel/vanilla and woodsy flavor to the hot chocolate.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract – The vanilla will enhance the chocolate in the hot chocolate.
  • Salt – Salt will also enhance the chocolate in the hot drink.

How to make a Vegan Hot Chocolate

In a medium sized sauce pan, add the non-dairy milk, chocolate chips, maple syrup and cocoa powder.

Continue by warming everything on medium heat, stirring with a whisk until the chocolate has melted and everything is hot.

Next stir in the vanilla and salt.

Taste the hot chocolate for sweetness before pouring into the cups, this is the time to add more sweetener in needed.

Remove the hot chocolate from the heat and pour into mugs.
