Sauteed Spinach and Chickpeas are an easy to make, inexpensive dish that is full of color and flavor.
I found a similar recipe in an old recipe book and thought, I have to try this!
And because I love both spinach and of course chickpeas, I thought this would be a perfect dish to make for my family!
With a few tweaks to the recipe, it now has a spot in my weekly menu planning.
This dish is not only healthy, it’s versatile, it can be the main dish, a side dish, or just a snack.
It is loaded with protein and fiber to keep you full and satisfied.
This dish takes little to no effort to whip up, making it a quick and easy dish when you are in a hurry.
It can also be easily customized to you and your families likes.
Can you use different seasoning in this dish?
YES! Try different blends or single spices.
Some examples are…
- Smoked Paprika
- Curry Seasonings – turmeric, coriander, ginger, paprika, cumin
- Hot Spices – Cayenne, crushed red pepper, chili powder
- Mustard Seeds
- Parsley
- Basil
- Cilantro
- Dill
- Chives
- Thyme
Ingredients needed for this dish
- Spinach – So why spinach? We all know raw spinach is mild with a slight sweet taste, but when cooked it becomes stronger in flavor, becoming more robust. Spinach is an extremely nutrient leafy green making it perfect for any meal.
- Chickpeas – The Chickpea is a excellent source of protein and fiber. This mildly nutty, slight earthy flavored legume has the perfect firm, yet creamy texture that is very versatile to be used in any dish.
- Onion – This can be a fresh sweet onion, leek, green onion or a shallot. In this recipe I used a leek, but any onion will do just fine. When sauteed, the onion becomes soft and sweetens as it cooks, adding flavor through out the dish.
- Garlic – In this recipe I used a minced garlic. Minced garlic has a stronger flavor than a garlic clove. I wanted to taste the garlic through out the dish, this is why I went with the minced garlic. Don’t want the stronger taste of garlic, use garlic cloves. Garlic cloves will give a sweeter and milder flavor.
- Oil – Any oil will work great in this recipe. I used a avocado oil for this dish.
- Seasoning – Salt and pepper to taste. Customize with your own spices or spice blends.
