Vegan Black Bean Burgers

Vegan Black Bean Burger

Last Updated on February 3, 2024

These Vegan Black Bean Burgers are a hearty, healthy, plant based burger that are not only easy to make but also full of flavor.

This burger is not only vegan, but it can also be made gluten free!

You can enjoy these burgers just as you would a regular burger on your favorite bun topped with all the fixings you love.

In my family we like to add a little Southwest flair to this burger.

We add fresh avocado, salsa, a vegan cheese, and aioli without a bun along with corn of the cob on the side.

These burgers are also freezer friendly too!

After you fry them up, let them cool and throw them in a freezer friendly container and pop them into your freezer.

When you are ready to use your burger, toss them in the microwave for about a minute, flip and cook for another minute, or until completely warmed.

Note: Cook time can vary depending on the microwave.

Ingredients needed for the burgers

  • Oatmeal – I have used instant, old fashioned, and quick oats for these burgers. Do not use the steel cut oats in this recipe.
  • Black Beans – The black bean has a earthy and nutty flavor with a soft and creamy texture.
  • Rice – Any rice will work well for this burger. I like to use the Basmati rice for my burgers.
  • Tapioca Flour – This flour thickens the burger mixture. Corn starch can be used instead of the tapioca flour.
  • Oil – Avocado oil is best used for this recipe. Because avocado oil has the highest smoke point of all the cooking oils, making it the safest oil to cook these burgers.
  • Seasonings – Italian seasoning, garlic and onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper.

How to make these Vegan Black Bean Burgers

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside for the black beans.

Rinse and drain the black beans.

After the black beans have drained, place the beans onto a paper towel to dry off any extra water.

Once you have dried off the beans, place them onto the parchment lined baking sheet.

Place the beans into the oven and bake for about 10 to 12 minutes.

While the beans are baking, cook the oatmeal in water.

Once the oatmeal is done, remove from heat, and set aside to cool.

After 10 to 12 minutes, check on the beans, you will know they are done when the beans start to pop open, notice in the picture below.

Remove the beans from the oven and pour them into a medium sized mixing bowl.

Add the cooked oatmeal to the beans and mash everything together.

Next, add the spices, tapioca flour, rice, and mix by hand, forming everything into a ball.

Place the ball into the refrigerator for about 1/2 hour.
