Learning How to make Homemade Vegan Pizza really is so simple!

The hardest part is making the pizza dough and that really is not that complicated.

Pizza dough uses simple ingredients, such as flour, yeast, oil, salt, sugar and water.

The only hard part is the kneading of the dough and waiting for it to rise.

That is it for the dough!

Next is the fun part! Picking out your toppings for the pizza!

A few topping suggestions:

  • Peppers – To name just a few, any color of bell peppers, jalapeno, banana, or maybe the habanero.
  • Olives – Any black and/or green olives.
  • Mushrooms – Any variety of mushroom that you prefer. My families favorites are the baby portabello, crimini, and the shiitake. We like to saute fresh mushrooms before adding to the pizza.
  • Artichokes – I like to use a marinated artichoke on our pizza.
  • Onion – Personally I like to use only sauteed onions on our pizza. Any variety of onion works great.
  • Garlic – Fresh garlic cloves sauteed with the onions our my families favorite. This can be replaced with a powdered or minced garlic.
  • Spinach – Fresh or sauteed spinach.
  • Pineapple – This is not for everyone, but I love adding pineapple to my pizza.
  • Tomatoes – Fresh or sun dried tomatoes.
  • Meat alternatives – Vegan crumbles, vegan bacon or a vegan sausage. This is optional, I personally do not add any meat alternatives to the pizza.

To cheese or not to cheese?

There are so many varieties of vegan cheese on the market today.

And there are so many homemade vegan cheeses that can be used on your pizza.

Another option is to not add a cheese to the top of your pizza, this is how I like to enjoy my pizza.

Experiment to find your favorites.

Ingredients for the pizza dough

  • Yeast – Active dry yeast or Instant yeast work the best in a pizza dough.
  • Warm Water – The water temperature needs to be between 105° and 115° F, this will activate the yeast.
  • Sugar – The sugar is the food for the yeast.
  • Oil – In this recipe I like to use olive oil. The oil improves the texture and flavor of the dough, as well as improving the capacity to stretch the dough.
  • Salt – The salt will regulate the yeast, which will strengthen the dough.
  • Flour – I have always used a all purpose flour for my pizza dough and have always had success. A bread flour will work just as well.

Topping Ingredients

  • Oil – I like to use a avocado or olive oil to brush over the dough before adding the toppings.
  • Seasonings – I sprinkle Italian seasoning on top of the oil before I add the toppings. Any seasoning of your choice can be added at this time.
  • Pizza Sauce – You can use homemade or canned pizza sauce, pasta sauce, marinara sauce, tomato sauce, or tomato paste for a pizza sauce. I personally like to use a pasta or marinara sauce for our pizza’s.
  • Vegetables – For our pizza’s there are a few vegetables I like to use, such as: any color of sauteed or fresh bell pepper, marinated artichokes, fresh spinach and fresh or sun dried tomatoes.
  • Mushrooms – I prefer to use fresh mushrooms for my pizza, but if they are not available I will use canned. The fresh mushrooms I like to saute before I add them to the pizza.
  • Onion – I have used minced, powered and fresh onions on our pizza. If I can I do prefer the fresh, but I like to saute them with the fresh mushrooms before adding to the pizza.
  • Olives – I do like to add both the black and green olives to our pizza’s.
  • Pineapple – Not everyone will want to add pineapple to the pizza, but I love it! And so if you are a lover of pineapple on pizza like me, I add it after the pizza has been baked and add it as a garnish.
  • Meat Alternative – If adding any meat alternative to the pizza, make sure to cook this up to the package directions before adding to the pizza. I personally do not add any meat alternative to our pizza’s, this is optional.
  • Cheese – This is optional.

Mix together the yeast, sugar, and 1/4 of a cup of warm water (between 105° and 115° F) in a large mixing bowl and set aside for 5 minutes.

Next add one cup of warm water ( between 105° – 115°), oil, salt, flour and blend until well combined.

Continue to knead the dough for about 8 to 10 minute in the bowl, adding flour as needed to prevent stickiness, until it forms a nice smooth soft ball.

After the dough has formed a nice soft ball, pour 1 Tbsp of oil into the bowl, roll the dough in the oil to completely coat the ball.

Cover the bowl loosely with a towel or plastic wrap.

Leave the bowl in a warm spot for about 4 hours to let the dough rise. The dough should double in size. ( I have let it rise all day. If you do this, check on it during the day.)

Preheat the oven to 450°F.

Divide the dough ball into half (if making 2 pizza’s). I make 2 pizza’s with this recipe, one is vegan and the second pizza is vegetarian.

Prepare the baking sheets with parchment paper.

Place the dough balls on the parchment paper.

Stretch the dough balls out to the size and shape you prefer.

Place the crust into the oven and bake for about 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, remove the crust from the oven to add your toppings.

Topping your Vegan Pizza

Drizzle and spread the oil onto the crust, sprinkle the seasoning on top and finish with your favorite pizza sauce.
