These Baked Cheddar Pear Sandwiches are simple to make and are a quick and easy meal for the family.
I was feeling a bit nostalgic for the good old grilled cheese, but wanted to change it up with a more adult flair.
So I thought, why not add fruit to this grilled cheese sandwich?
Sharp and salty cheddar cheese paired with the crisp sweetness of a sliced pear makes for a satisfying and flavorful alternative to the classic grilled cheese.
Take it even farther by adding a few sauteed onions to this sandwich, which are optional.
Add some sweet and tangy homemade maple mustard and this sandwich becomes a new family favorite.
With this recipe, I decided to bake the sandwiches, and I love how they turned out!
The bread browned beautifully, the cheese melted perfectly, all while cutting down the cooking time considerably.
No more worrying about burning the bread or only making one or two at a time, just pop these sandwiches in the oven.
They only take a total of 15 minutes to bake and they will be ready to serve!
Ingredients needed for this sandwich
- Bread – I used a sour dough Italian bread for the bread. You can use any variety of bread for this sandwich. Or why not try try my recipe for A Tuscan Herb Artisan Bread.
- Margarine – Use your favorite vegan margarine or drizzle olive oil on both sides of the bread.
- Onion – I used a sauteed sweet onion on the sandwich. This is optional.
- Cheese – Use your favorite vegan cheddar cheese on this sandwich. But you can also try different cheeses, such as a Havarti, Swiss, or a smoked cheese for a little something different.
- Pear – A fresh ripe pear, sliced thin gives you a slight crisp and nutty sweet flavor to your sandwich.
- Maple Mustard – I made a alternate version of a honey mustard with maple syrup, yellow mustard and a vegan mayo. Don’t want to make your own? Use a store bought honey mustard.
