This Vegan Shit on a Shingle is just as simple as the original version.
What is Shit on a Shingle?
Shit on a shingle is traditionally made with chipped beef and white gravy made with dairy, so in other words NOT VEGAN!
I wanted to create a vegan version of this simple and quick meal of a old family favorite.
And it really was not to hard, eliminate the meat and dairy, make a white sauce add different vegetables.
What vegetables to add to the gravy?
There really is no limit to what vegetables that can be added.
Try a different variety each time you make it, or eliminate all vegetables but one.
I love to add green beans, peas, carrots, onions, and mushrooms when I make this gravy.
Any vegetables will work, try using up left overs in the refrigerator, fresh, frozen, or even canned.
You and your family will love this Vegan Shit on a Shingle, it is customizable, simple to make and a quick meal.
Ingredients for shit on a shingle
- Minced Garlic – A slight garlic flavor that blends well with the mushrooms and onions.
- Onion – In this recipe I used both a powdered and fresh green onion.
- Mushrooms – I love using only fresh mushrooms when I make this meal. Sauteed with the garlic and onion will bring out the slightly salty, rich, earthy flavor. In a pinch you can use canned mushrooms.
- Vegetable Broth and Water – Adding vegetable broth will enhance the flavor, adding water will keep the saltiness down.
- Flour and Cornstarch – The flour and cornstarch help to thicken the gravy.
- Plant Based Milk – Any plant based milk will work for this gravy. I used a plain unsweetened almond milk.
- Vegan Margarine – The fat from the margarine will balance and distribute the flavors.
- Salt and Pepper – Flavor enhancers.
Vegetables for the gravy
- Carrots
- Green Beans
- Peas, optional.
