This Old Fashioned Raw Apple Cake is a simply easy to make cake full of all the flavors of fall.

It is one of my families favorite cake recipes past down over the years from my great grandmother.

I remember her making this cake with the ripe apples of fall.

Serving the cake right out of the oven with fresh whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The smell of the warming spice of cinnamon baked with fresh apples in a sweet and delicious cake would welcome us into her kitchen.

What apples work best in this cake?

I have used many varieties for this cake, such as Gala, Pink lady, Fuji, Braeburn, and Honeycrisp.

There really is not a specific apple that I prefer, but keep in mind the apple needs to stay firm when baked and not turn into a mushy mess.

To peel or not peel the apples?

A peeled apple will give you a soft and consistent texture to this Old Fashioned Raw Apple Cake.

So take the time and peel the apples before adding to this cake.

Ingredient used in this raw apple cake

  • Flour – I used a all purpose flour in this cake.
  • Butter – The butter will help to soften and moisten the cake.
  • Sugar – I used a pure cane sugar to sweeten the cake.
  • Eggs – The eggs will give structure, flavor, color and leavening needed for the cake.
  • Baking Soda – Baking soda will help the batter rise while baking.
  • Salt – Salt is the flavor enhancer in the cake.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract – Vanilla extract does the same as salt, enhances the flavor of all the other ingredients.
  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon brings in the flavors of fall with its woody and spicy taste. It pairs perfectly with the fresh apples.
  • Hot Water – Why hot water and not cold? This is a question I never got to ask my great grandmother. There is so many different reasons out there and unfortunately we probably never will no the reasoning behind it. But my guess is to active the baking soda that will help the cake rise.
  • Fresh Apples – Any firm and crisp peeled fresh apples work the best for this cake.

How to make this Old Fashioned Raw Apple Cake

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Grease a 13×9 glass baking dish and set aside.

Clean and dice the apples.

Add and blend together the butter, sugar, eggs, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, baking soda, and hot water.

Slowly add and blend in the flour.

Once the flour is well combined, fold in the raw diced apples.

Pour and spread the batter evenly into the glass baking dish.

Place into the oven and bake for 45 to 60 minute, checking at 45 minutes.

Check the cake by inserting a tooth pick in the center, if it comes out clean the cake is done, if not continue baking.

Once the cake is done, remove from the oven and let it cool for 15 to 30 minutes, cut and serve warm.
