Learn how to make the simply simplest homemade Fresh Pico de Gallo.
A salsa that comes together with just a few fresh simple ingredient such as herbs, tomatoes, onion, peppers and is ready in as little as 15 minutes.
The one thing that I strongly recommend is to always use fresh ingredients for your pico de gallo, never substitute with any canned or dried ingredients.
This chunky salsa can be a healthy, crisp, and fresh quick dip, or a compliment to any dish.
What I love most about pico de gallo?
It’s so simple to just throw together for any time of the year such as holidays, parties, or barbecues.
Not to mention that this salsa can be used in so many different ways.
- Add it to a taco or burrito
- Top your favorite pasta
- Use it as a dip for chips and crackers
- A topping for your salad
- As a side to any meal
Ingredients needed for this salsa
- Tomatoes – I used roma tomatoes for this salsa. Roma tomatoes have a lower water content, they are firm with a balance of sweet and bitter flavor.
- Onion – In this recipe I used a shallot as my onion of choice. I love the slightly sweet and subtle flavor of the shallot. You can use your favorite onion in this salsa. Other onions that would work well are any sweet onion, leek or green onions.
- Garlic – I added minced garlic to my pico de gallo for a bit more flavor, this is optional.
- Cilantro – A fresh cilantro is preferred for this salsa.
- Lemon or Lime Juice – I have used both. Use what you have on hand. The juice helps to preserve the salsa, but also adds a bright fresh flavor.
- Salt – The salt enhances the flavor of the other ingredients.
- Peppers – Optional. Add any pepper of choice to this pico de gallo, such as jalapeno or bell peppers.
How to make this Fresh Pico De Gallo
Clean the cilantro and tomatoes.
Slice the tomatoes in half lengthwise and clean out the inside with a spoon. Save the insides for another recipe, like this one on How to make a customizable Vegan Chili.
Dice the seeded tomatoes and add them to a glass bowl.
Chop up the onion, fresh cilantro, then add to the bowl of tomatoes.
Optional peppers, clean, dice the peppers of choice and add to the bowl of tomatoes.
Add the lemon or lime juice, minced garlic and salt.
Stir, serve immediately or cover and place into refrigerator to enjoy later.
Note : Use the Pico De Gallo within 2 to 3 days for the best taste.
Fresh Pico De Gallo
Ingredients
- 8 Roma Tomatoes
- 2 Tbsp Shallot
- 1/4 Cup Fresh Cilantro
- 2 tsp Minced Garlic
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Lemon or Lime Juice
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 Tbsp Pepper of your choice. Optional. Add bell pepper or a jalapeno pepper.
