Spooky Halloween Decorating Ideas that are sure to scare those unsuspecting guest.

For the whole month of October, I spend my time creating a unique scare for the neighborhood.

Creating both inside and outside the house is important.

But the big reveal isn’t until the spooky and frightful evening of October 31st, HALLOWEEN!

I realize that most trick-or-treaters are probably not coming into your house, but it is still fun to decorate for those visitors that come for a visit during the month of October.

Another great part about decorating for Halloween is that you do not have to use or buy expensive decorations.

You can build and create many different displays with things you have around the house.

Personally I use many of the items that I already have and incorporate them into the displays.

Ideas can be old boards/pallets, old and broken furniture, old clothes or costumes, even knickknacks/tchotchkes.

So as you see Halloween is not just fun for those trick-or-treaters, it can be fun for the decorator too!

Below are some of my creations that can scare, spook and impress your Halloween guest.

Spooky Halloween Decorating Ideas

Dress up the plain skeleton’s!

Skeleton’s can be scary just as they are, but why not dress them up! Use old costumes from the past, old clothes that are torn or well worn, even pieces of fabric that have an elegant spooky appearance.

A caged skeleton in a dog kennel, add in bugs, snakes, spiders, and chains with a up light is aspooky prop that uses both old clothes and items that are around the home.

A Halloween Floral that can add to the spooky atmosphere

Try different smokey, airy, white, and black fabric flowers for a floral arrangement in your home. Add wood cut outs and black or white airy ribbons to enhance the scary element to your arrangement.

Making a Halloween Night Display

A display for Halloween night can be created with everyday items and furnature. Below I used my potting bench, chairs, large spool, candle holders, crates and plant holder.

Dress up these items with spooky fabric and add a few skeletons here and there to create a perfect back drop for those trick-or-treater selfies.

In the below picture I used knickknacks/tchotchkes such as old jars for potions, mannequins dressed in old clothes and mask with the added touch of a fake spider web as the smoke or bubbles in a cauldron.

I love to add accent lighting to set a spooky mood as it becomes dark by adding battery powered color changing flashing lights to the jars and cauldron.

Wall Displays

Wall displays can be a unique way that will bring in an element of scare to your home.

Look for broken or worn out garden fences and hang them on your wall.

Continue by adding in branches and paper cut outs of bats, spiders, cats, or ravens to give your home a spooky feel.

Making Halloween Decorations

If you are able to make your own Halloween decorations, do it! It is well worth the time, is much cheaper, and it is a one of a kind.

Here is an example of one of my creations, a coffin made out of old pallets.

I wanted the coffin to look like it was coming out of the ground, which makes it perfect for a grave yard set up a yard.

Old wood can be used to make creeky old fences or even rustic signs to guide the trick-or-treaters to a spooky and scary scene.

Using broken or old items

Although there are a few items that I might throw away, don’t throw out those broken skeleton’s.

These are great to use in different staging areas at Halloween.

If you have coffins, add the bones around or in the coffin.

Throw the bones in a front garden, hang in the shrubs or trees, or add them around a headstone for a ghoulish effect.

A Spook-Tacular Front Porch

Creating a unique but spooky front porch that is a bewitching welcome to those trick-or-treaters as well as having that spooky element that is Halloween.

Using those old falling apart items, add in a few lights and a few Halloween items to give your porch a eerie and scary feel.

Using a Silhouette

Silhouette’s are a great way to scare! You can make your own out of cardboard or wood.

Place them in your yard or why not in your windows!

If you place them in the window, during the day the home owners get the scare, but during the night your guest get the scare.

Place a silhouette in a window, close the curtains, and let the sun do the rest.

I hope my Spooky Halloween Decorating Ideas get your ghostly fright on!
