Dutch Baby Pancakes are one of my families favorite breakfast weekend treats.
A simple to make large fluffy pancake garnished with a fruit and syrup of choice.
But what I love the most about this pancake is that you only need 5 ingredients to make these easy and delicious pancakes!
So what is a Dutch Baby Pancake?
Most people have heard of Dutch Baby Pancakes, but if you are new to this treat, here is a little bit about what they are.
A Dutch Baby is a large puffy golden brown pancake made with just a few ingredients and baked in the oven.
Some know them as a German Pancake or a Bismark.
Others, including me, think these puffed pancakes are very similar to a American popover.
And just like the regular pancake, there is so many ways to serve them.
Serve with fresh fruit, syrup, powdered sugar, jam or a whipped topping of choice.
What is the difference between a dutch baby pancake and a regular pancake?
A regular pancake has similar ingredients to the dutch baby, but cooked differently.
The regular pancake is cooked on top of the stove, the dutch baby is baked in the oven.
Does the dutch baby have to be baked in a dutch oven or a cast iron skillet?
No, I have had success baking my dutch baby in a glass baking dish.
As long as you make sure to preheat the oven, melt the butter in the dish and pour the batter in right after removing the hot dish from the oven.
You should also have success with your own puffy dutch baby pancake.
Is the dutch baby pancake only a breakfast treat? NO!
Even though we think of a pancake as a breakfast item, these puffed pancakes serve well at a brunch and even as a dessert!
So however you decide to enjoy this puffy treat, know that it will become a family favorite!
Ingredients needed for the dutch baby
- Butter – Real butter is the only way to go with this puffed pancake. It adds to the flavor and texture with it’s soft, creamy, richness with just a hint of sweetness.
- Eggs – Eggs add flavor, moisture, structure and are the leavening in this recipe.
- Milk – Milk adds the texture and flavor to these pancakes.
- Flour – In this recipe I used a all purpose white flour.
- Pure Vanilla Extract – Vanilla extract adds a slight vanilla and caramel flavor to the pancake.
How to make Dutch Baby Pancakes
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
In a 7 x 9 inch baking glass dish, add 3 Tbsp of butter and place into the preheated oven for 8 minutes, melting the butter.
While the butter is melting in the oven, it is time to blend the remaining ingredients in a blender until smooth.
Once the butter has melted, remove the dish from the oven and continue to tilt the dish so that the butter covers the sides and bottom.
Next pour your blended batter into the dish.
Return the dish to the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
Do not open the oven for at least 20 minutes, have the oven light on to watch the dutch baby.
You will start to notice the pancake turning a light brown and the sides will start to puff up along the sides.
After the pancake has browned, remove from the oven.
Do not let the pancake cool, cut up the dutch baby and serve immediately.
Garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar, fresh fruit, jam, syrup, and/or whipped topping.
Enjoy your new treat with your favorite hot beverage.
