Time for that Seasonal Cleaning!

Is it Time for that Seasonal Cleaning?

Are you feeling overwhelmed by that spring cleaning?

We all have a love/hate relationship to any cleaning.

And spring cleaning is even more dreaded than your normal weekly or monthly cleaning.

That over whelming task of cleaning each room from top to bottom, and all in one weekend!

Well, I came up with a idea about 20 years ago to make this task as painless as possible.

Trust me, this will make your spring and fall cleaning not so over whelming.

Did you noticed I said spring and fall cleaning?

I broke up the cleaning task into twice a year instead of once a year.

Also I do only one room a week.

(For those of you that have season changes like we do in Minnesota, it makes much more sense.)

I start by making a list of everything I wish to clean in the home during the spring and fall.

Grabbing a tablet and writing the name of each room at the top of the page, example….OUR BEDROOM.

For each room I made a list of all the cleaning I would like done in that room.

Example- OUR BEDROOM

  • Clean out drawers
  • Wash rugs

Next I went through the list and added a S by the spring task and a F by the fall task.

OUR BEDROOM

  • Clean out drawers- S
  • Wash rugs- F
  • Wash blankets- F
  • Wipe down all wood with furniture polish- S

I continued making a list for every room in the home.

After finishing making the lists, I decide when to complete the task.

I started separating the spring and fall cleaning tasks by room into two columns.

Once I finished, I wanted to make these list easily accessible for everyone for the seasonal cleanings.

For this, I separated each season on reference cards by room.

If you choose, you can laminate each card so it is easy to check off the task with a erasable marker as the task is completed.

Next I added a hole punch at the top left corner, put all the cards on a ring, and hung these cards near the cleaning supplies.

This was the best way to be reminded of the list and to remember when to start the seasonal cleaning.

Now remember not to do all the Spring or Fall Cleaning in one weekend, break it up into one room a week, it’s so much less stress!

I also do the cards/lists for my outside buildings and garage.

You can add the outside cards to the home Spring and Fall Cleaning cards if you would like.

Or keep the outside cards separate on there own ring, personally I like to keep them all together with the inside cards.

Another way to be reminded when to start that seasonal cleaning is to write it on your new calendar for the year.

(Or if you are all digital, enter the cleanings into your calendar/schedule.)

I always start my spring cleaning at the beginning of January and continue through the spring until we have completed the spring cleaning.

For the fall cleaning, I start at the beginning of July.

I know no one wants to think of fall cleaning in the middle of summer, but this way it will be done by October.

Not everyone will have this same schedule for the seasonal cleaning, it all depends on how many rooms you have to clean.

Make adjustments with the schedule, whatever works best for you and your home.

You will notice that not only will this idea keep you and your family on track, but also keep everyone organized.

And helping everyone from not feeling so overwhelmed.

These cards are a perfect way to make sure the whole family helps.

You will be able to divide each card/list up for each family member.

So yes! It is Time to start that Seasonal Cleaning!
